Not all of us are code weenies, some of us need to use a computer in a fast and convenient manner, and point and click is really handy for that. Typing everything out a regresion, not progress. Where's Accessories?, and the first person to say, just type it gets a wedgy. Its like a corner stone, it all "starts" from that point and can be counted on to not change (notice the similarity in that statement.) It can't be called a corner stone if its a stupid Start Page and doesnt have the things we really need, but is thoughtful enough to include an entertainement news square and don't forget the weather. Some things are sacred and should not be fucked with. Thats like taking the middle bun out of a Big Mac, or forcing NASCAR to switch to solar powered skateborads.

You cannot give users a set in stone way of doing things as important as the start button and menu for 18 years and then pull it out and not even give an option to turn it back on. With Modern Mix you can even have resizable windows, imagine that :)

The unix shells ran rings around DOS 30 years ago just as an example, so this is not a new phenomenon and we all should really be used to this by now.īy the way, for my personal Windows 8 machine, Start8 and Modern Mix are awesome. Microsoft has never had great interfaces when compared to their competitors at any given moment.

On my Windows 7 box with multiple monitors, the window snap feature does not work on edges that have another window next to them.

I am not saying that there is not a lot to like about Windows 8 or Server 2012, but it should surprise exactly no one that the UI leaves a lot to be desired. Where I work they have not finished their Windows 7 roll out, so I am not getting Windows 8 anytime soon (nor do I care to, my desktop is not touch enabled and works well). There are all sorts of nice management tools that you can run from your workstation, except that you can't use them with server 2012 unless your workstation is also running Windows 8. Now this should not really be a problem since you should not need to RDP to a server in the first place. It is by no means a deal breaker, the good outweighs the bad. So imagine it is the weekend, you have to remote in to the server over a high latency link, you remote to your workstation then open another RDP session to the server. It actually talks about 7 new features that are present in 2012 (and does not talk about the GUI at all)įirst, the windows key does not always work, it really depends on what checkmarks you have set in your RDP client. The article does not mean MAD as angry, but mad as crazy.

And that is what MS is aiming to do with the tile layout. They might not know their way around an OS, but if it looks like their laptop or tablet, it will be more familiar ground. They are getting easier and accessible for small business. Does that interface have to be in the server? Yes, it DOES! Now, think again about cloud offerings. Sure it is not as fluid with keyboard and mouse, but you have to chose one or the other, and touch screen is where the average Joe is inclined to go. The interface for the tablets and touch screen is refreshing. Using 8 as my primary desktop makes it easy to get around 2012. All the interfaces come together when you use the line. Think about MS strategy, people praise OSX for the design, but then hate MS when does something similar? I have used Windows phones, and the new tablets, I have a laptop with 8, and I use 2 desktops with 8. 2012 compared to 2008 R2 is a lot faster.

I have several 2012 servers, only 1 with full GUI (RDS server), and 1 with the middle, the rest are core.

And this is not personal, but if we work in IT, we have to learn to use the software the right way instead of complaining about it. We probably will see the benefits in 10 years. I avoid the GUI, and I understand why the 1 interface on all Windows products. Classic shell ? Really? Why would you do that to a server? You are adding a program and service that consumer resources (whatever it little it might be) to work around a graphical interface dislike in a server that should not be managed from the console in the first place?
